Considered the first of Chekhov’s four major plays, The Seagull emphasizes character development, emotion, relationships, and feelings over the action typical of plot-based scripts. While the translation by McKittrick and Smeliansky offer a more universally relatable script, the plot remains the same. Each character struggles with their dissatisfaction of either themselves or one another, and ultimately ends the show without altering their behavior.
